Last year's KASA Legislative Drive-In Day was scheduled for February 27, which will be during National Public School's Week. The General Assembly will be very busy on this date with committee meetings and other groups competing for legislators' attention - so schedule meetings with your legislators for February 27 as early as possible.
The primary goal of Legislative Drive-In Day is for legislators to hear directly from their local school leaders on important education issues. On February 27 the House and the Senate will likely hold caucus meetings at 1:00 p.m. EST and convene in the Capitol at 2:00 p.m. EST - so expect any meeting with legislators to be scheduled between the time you arrive in Frankfort and 1:00 p.m. EST.
The best way to schedule a meeting with most legislators is to email them directly at first name.last name@lrc.ky.gov, or call 502-564-8100 and ask to speak to the legislator’s office. This will likely put you in touch with your legislator’s legislative assistant who can advise how to best schedule with your specific legislator. Meetings typically last 15 to 20 minutes, rarely no more than 30 minutes, so it's important to make your points in a succinct and organized manner. A one-page bullet point list of local district priorities that you can leave with a legislator will help maintain continuity.
Talking points will be available a few days before, from KASA’s website and also distributed at the briefing meetings.
To schedule your visit, call the legislative switchboard at (502) 564-8100.
