This year's KASA Legislative Drive-In Day is scheduled for February 8, the second day of Part II of the 2023 General Assembly, when there should be more time and opportunities for school leaders to meet with their local legislators. With the Kentucky legislature, however, the time is always in short supply and many organizations and causes compete for legislator's attention. Scheduling meetings sooner than later is usually best.
The primary goal of Legislative Drive-In Day is for legislators to hear directly from their local school leaders on important education issues. February 8 will likely be a day with few, if any committee meetings, and most legislators will be free until the House and Senate convene, which typically occurs at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesdays.
You can contact your local legislator's legislative assistant to arrange for a time to meet with them between 8:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on February 8. Not everyone can be in Frankfort by 8:00 a.m. and not every legislator will be in their Capitol Annex office by that time either but the sooner a meeting is asked for the greater chances of finding a time that works for both you and your legislator. This meeting typically last 15 to 20 minutes, rarely no more than 30 minutes, so it's important to make your points in a succinct and organized manner. A one-page bullet point list of local district priorities that you can leave with a legislator will help maintain continuity. By the second week in January, you should have a list of recommendations the Coalition to Sustain the Teaching Profession will make to the 2023 General Assembly.
Talking points will be available a few days before, from KASA’s website and also distributed at the briefing meetings.
To schedule your visit, call the legislative switchboard at (502) 564-8100.
