Application Information for Director of Executive Coaching & Mentoring

KASA is seeking one or two retired school superintendents to serve as the Director of Executive Coaching & Mentoring. This position is part of the Executive Leadership Series for Onboarding First Year Superintendents and is grant funded. Candidates should have served as a school superintendent in Kentucky and have a minimum of five years of experience. The ideal candidate will have an in-depth understanding of Kentucky's public school system and educational leadership, be up to date on current issues and trends, and demonstrate a deep commitment to KASA's mission and impact.

2. Three (3) Letters of Recommendation:

  • One from a sitting superintendent
  • The letters should showcase leadership, contributions to education, positive community image and collaboration, and ongoing engagement in education trends.
  • One from a current or past board member
  • One from a community member or education leader

3.    References/Names of Leaders You Have Mentored:
Include name, email address, and phone number for three leaders you formally or informally mentored during or after your time serving as superintendent.  

4.    Social Media Footprint
Provide screenshots or links to professional social media accounts (e.g., X/Twitter, LinkedIn) demonstrating how you model communication and leadership.

Section 1: Leadership Experience

  • Please describe your experience as a superintendent in Kentucky, highlighting the duration of your tenure and the school districts you served.
  • What was your most significant accomplishment during your time as a superintendent, and how did it impact the district’s outcomes?  Provide evidence to support this accomplishment.  
  • Describe a challenging situation you faced as a superintendent and the steps you took to resolve it. What was the outcome and what did you learn?


Section 2: Leadership Disposition and Ethics

  • Describe how you built trust and collaboration among stakeholders (e.g., school boards, staff, parents, and the community). Provide an example of a time you successfully brought a group together to achieve a goal.
  • Describe a time when you faced an ethical dilemma as a superintendent. What decision did you make, and what did you learn from the experience?


Section 3: Engagement and Current Awareness

  • Describe specific steps you have taken since retirement to remain informed about changes and challenges in Kentucky public education.
  • List any publications, forums, or professional networks you are involved in or have lead and explain how they inform your leadership practice.  


Section 4: Evidence of Impact

  • How have you mentored or supported emerging leaders in education? Provide examples of your approach and any measurable outcomes.
  • In reflection of the job role of the superintendent, what do you consider your area of strength in terms of job knowledge and expertise?  Describe how you used your knowledge and strength to help another leader or leaders grow.
