KASA 2020 Charity of Choice
Rae of Sunshine foundation
Earlier this year, KASA’s planning team adopted the Rae of Sunshine Foundation as the 2020 charity and moment of inspiration for the annual leadership institute July 29-31, 2019. It was specifically chosen to shine the light on mental illness and to support the work of our Vice President Taylora Schlosser (Marion Co. superintendent).
The Rae of Sunshine foundation is named in honor of Taylor Rae, Taylora’s daughter, who took her life earlier this year at the age of 19.
The Foundation honors Taylor Rae’s life and is focused on eliminating the stigma placed on those with mental illness, increasing access to resources and support for social and emotional health and wellness, and providing scholarships to students preparing for careers in this field.
Each year the planning team seeks out charitable organizations that support our students and their families. In fact, we’ve adopted such groups since 2002 with some of the most successful being Jarret’s Joy Cart, Ronald McDonald House, The Center for Courageous Kids, Wounded Warriors and last year’s Trooper Island Camp.
When Taylora shared her story and the news of the Foundation, the planning team embraced the Rae of Sunshine Foundation as the perfect choice to feature given the mental health crisis impacting our schools. In fact, the 2020 conference theme, “Light, Leadership, Legacy: A Vision for 2020 and Beyond,” was chosen to further honor Taylora as she charges us to lead the way in bringing attention and solutions to our students who struggle day in and day out with mental illness.
The fundraiser began November 1 and runs through July 31, 2020, at the closing session of KASA’s annual leadership institute. Thanks to Supt. Alvin Garrison, who serves on the KASA board representing KASS, the fundraiser took off this week with the state’s superintendents leading the way and making the first donations through their co-ops with a culminating event planned at the KASS conference in December.
Please join us as we lift up Taylora and her family. Make plans now to give generously.
