KASA 2019 Charity of Choice

Trooper Island Camp

Each year, KASA’s leadership institute planning team chooses a charity to spotlight at its annual event. The 2019 featured charity was chosen to honor the work of our Kentucky state troopers and others who work tirelessly to keep us safe.

Trooper Island Camp was developed by the Kentucky State Police as part of a long-range program of public service to Kentucky’s underprivileged boys and girls, ages 10-12. It provides a place where the tensions and turmoil of their everyday lives can be forgotten; for one week young people can be given a touch of hope and desire of a better tomorrow.

Spearheaded by former State Police Director, Colonel James E. Bassett, the idea was to establish a permanent recreational site where trooper and child could share a week-long experience. The location was selected in a secluded corner of Dale Hollow Lake near the Cumberland and Clinton County line, where an island was leased from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and a non-profit charitable corporation was formed.

In operation for 45 years, the camp is solely financed by donations, no public funds are used. Each year, the camp hosts approximately 700 children, providing good food, fresh air, recreation, guidance and structured esteem-building activities designed to build good citizenship and positive relationships with law enforcement officers.

An outgrowth of the summer camp, Trooper Island also awards scholarships to students in Kentucky who plan to attend college, technical, or vocational schools. Last year, eight high school seniors were awarded $1,000 scholarships.

Come learn more about this amazing program during the general session, July 18, and also be sure to stop by their booth.

It costs $350 to send one student to Trooper Island Camp. Our goal is to send 29 students to camp by raising $10,000. The fundraising effort has begun, and we invite you to join us.
