Urgent Appeal: Protect Kentucky's Education Funding
The budget reconciliation proposal that passed the U.S. House early on the morning of May 22 eliminates all Title II funding for effective instruction, all Title III funding to help ESL students assimilate into an English speaking environment, and includes a $20 billion school choice program (Educational Choice for Children Act) that is very similar to the Educational Opportunity Accounts legislation passed by the Kentucky legislature in 2021 and was found unconstitutional later that year by the Supreme Court. The bill also makes substantial cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, which will impact many of your students and will likely impact the ability of school districts to bill Medicaid for student health services.
Working with our federal partner, the American Association of School Administrators, we are asking superintendents to urge Senators McConnell and Paul to oppose these provisions in the budget bill.
